Released ahead of Sweden’s September election and the US midterms, Stringency.ai addresses what research now describes as a historic collapse in public trust in journalism
Aftermath Interactive, a Malmö-based company, today announces the launch of Stringency.ai.
The launch comes at a critical moment. According to the Reuters Institute’s 2026 Digital News Report, trust in news in the US has now fallen to 25% overall. The picture is not much better globally: news avoidance – people deliberately steering clear of journalism – has reached 42% worldwide, up from 29% in 2017. Concern for online misinformation is also steadily growing and has surpassed the 60% mark according to the same report.
This erosion of trust has direct implications for democracy. 2026 is shaping up to be a defining election year. Voters will be navigating a fractured information landscape in which knowing what – and who – to trust has never been harder.
Stringency.ai is built around three initial tools that together serve both ends of the media equation: the everyday reader who wants to know whether what they are reading deserves to be taken seriously, and the publisher who wants to demonstrate that it does.
The project is a direct result of Aftermath Interactive’s ongoing investment in AI-assisted development.
“This all came out of work conducted on our Sustainable Play Framework which was announced back in March. This utility was too exciting to pass up,” says CEO Kim Lund.
The first commercial project that utilizes a Stringency.ai tool is the Swedish civic journalism startup Svarafolket.se which will go live shortly.
