Malmö, Sweden — May 7, — Aftermath Interactive, a Swedish gaming industry studio and gaming industry consultancy, today published a white paper introducing a new regulatory model for online gambling: an intent-driven framework that ties oversight to why people play, not just how they play.
Rather than relying on regulators and operators to detect and restrain harmful behaviour after the fact, the framework maps games, mechanics and wagering opportunities to well-defined, empirically grounded player motivations — such as chasing a big win, following a favourite team, or enjoying a themed adventure. Each resulting “pathway” is built to serve one motivation only, which by design excludes the products and patterns that don’t belong to it.
“We’re asking the industry to become experts in promoting recreational play, instead of just experts in preventing harmful play,” said Kim Lund of Aftermath Interactive. “When a pathway is anchored in a real motivation, harmful play isn’t something you have to police — it’s simply outside the boundary of what is offered.“
The white paper is the first output of a what the company – through partnerships with various stakeholders – intends to extend into broader project that will include a commercial sizing of the intent-driven recreational play market, a fully developed sample player pathway, a proposed framework for pathway approval and monitoring, and an AI-powered mapper prototype capable of evaluating specific games or wagering products against a roster of proposed pathways.
“The industry can keep trying to stem the social and financial consequences of pervasive harm generation by overcoming fundamenally misaligned incentives or it can radically rethink its approach. We’ve now paved the way for the latter.“
